As part of the Chinese government's push to revive rural areas across China that had been left behind amidst the more recent rapid urban development, the Xishuangbanna masterplan was created. It consists of twenty-three hectares of rural tropical mountainside outside of Jinghong City, in the Yunnan Province.

A respite from high-paced urban development, Xishuangbanna is a vast resort village totaling 3,046 dwellings, with 20-high rises and 127-multifamily villas along the region's steep mountainous topography. The plan carefully takes the site into account where the grade drops more than 20-meters at a slope of 60°. The soaring towers exaggerate the undulating landscapes at the peaks. Three-story villas preserve the natural view corridors of the valley while creating walkable communities nestled in the mountainsides. In the lower foothills outside the residential core, 18-hectares of low-scale, waterside, mixed-use programming flows over the terrain, respecting the ancient vistas of the surrounding landscape. The area principally will cater to festivities like the Water-Splashing, Lunar New Year, and other cultural events.

Of the 1,800-hectare site, more than 251 hectares will be maintained as a natural tree canopy to prevent erosion and conserve the natural beauty and biodiversity of the site. The masterplan takes an organic shape as buildings give way to the natural streams and run-off waterways to protect the vital balance between the built and natural environments. The new resort carefully intertwines with the area's natural landscape and creates space for recreational and wellness experiences that help bring communities together.
